Jud’s Game Rating:

Graphics: ***  Player participation (PP) ****  Satisfaction Factor (SF) ****

Frustration Factor (FF)  Nil

MURDER SHE WROTE, from the TV show of the same name, has 5 Cases in the form of books that you open.  You can select either Relaxed or Timed Mode, there is a Skip button for the story, or you can Left click to fast forward through the dialogue.  The Locations are set in Cabot Cove, Maine, USA with Jessica Fletcher, Seth the Doctor, and Mort the Sheriff as they appear in the show.  Their conversations are not long-winded, but concise and to the point, so you don’t find yourself bogged down in dialogue.  You enter each story via a book binding, and there is also a Save and Exit setting when you are ready to Quit the game.

As you open each location you have to find the vowels and letter ‘y’ keys for Jessica’s typewriter.  Once found they type into the object list so you can find them in the scene.  You also collect a typewriter ribbon/tape from each scene to add to your Hints.  There are a few puzzles along the way – such as reassembling a shredded invoice, finding and matching shoeprint patterns, solving a word and picture puzzle to open a box, and sorting seed packets to name a few.  Each story is fairly long giving plenty of game play, and in a point and click way it is quite interactive.

As for the graphics, I had to reset the parameters of the game through the Windows 7 Troubleshooting facility to Microsoft XP (Service pack 2) – see Problems and Solutions article for instructions.  This was so the game would play properly and the texts would be readable.  You may need to do the same.  But the graphics are not as clear as they could be.  So though they are good, they could be crisper which would make the hidden object collection easier.  The locations are complex, authentically detailed, colourful, and suit the Cabot Cove main location.

Though this involves murder, it is quite sanitized and would be okay for older kids to play.  It is more about the solving of puzzles and locating objects than gory murder.

About judsartwork

I write reviews of Adventure and Hidden Object games that are Crime, Fantasy, SciFi, Renovation, Travel, Quest and/or Mystery by genre. I have a Masters in Writing (2006) and have been writing novels, both crime and fantasy for many years; plus Haiku, verse, and prose both fictional and literary. I am also an artist of modern, Acrylic, textural and hard edge work, underwater, fantasy, expressionist, and Cosmos paintings. I use mixed media (Acrylic, Watercolour, Pastels) in textural Monoprints, finding surprises to expose within each work. Having both an analytical and creative mind has meant that I have strong powers of observation, and the persistence required to follow computer problems through till I solve them. Of course I am not always successful, but am willing to ask for a little help in order to then unlock the main problem myself. My Troubleshooting Blog, 'Problems and Solutions', was the result of my tenacity.
