MORTIMER BECKETT – AND THE SPOOKY MANOR

At the outset I want to say that the graphics are probably better on XP.  I could have reset them using Microsoft 7 Troubleshooting via Control Panel, but opted not to as they were bearable as they were.  I might reset them at a later date and if there is a considerable improvement, then I will update this blog accordingly.

The game itself opens with a comic book style graphic for the introductory story.  Mortimer receives a package from his Great Uncle Jerome, asking for his help to rid his Manor house of ghosts, by locating scattered parts of the Starter Unit for his Ghost Machine.  As the compulsory Tutorial demonstrates, in order to do this he/you need to find and assemble, in Inventory, pieces of missing objects.  These are then replaced in various rooms, not necessarily the one they came from, while some are needed to open the hidden doorway to the next floor or suite of rooms.  The levels are:

  1. Cellar
  2. Ground Floor
  3. Guest House
  4. Garden
  5. East Wing
  6. West Wing
  7. Second Floor
  8. Attic.

At each level a Starter part is located, and also part of a Secret Code is revealed.  This is needed at the end in order to locate his Great Uncle Jerome and collect the last item of the Starter.

This is an entertaining game, great for the family, and with only one FF – the Red Arrow Cursor has to recharge itself between each item collected, thus making collection slow!  This was one of the early versions of this type of Hidden Object Games.  It leads on to the next game in the series.

MORTIMER BECKETT – AND THE TIME PARADOX

With this game the graphics are good on Microsoft 7 – they are clear, and the texts are just okay.  There is no need to reset them.  The story is well thought out, with a clear goal in sight.  There is the same niggle as the first Game – that of the Red Arrow Cursor needing to recharge between object-parts collected, slowing the game down.

It opens with Great Uncle Jerome sending Mortimer/you through a time portal to try to retrieve parts of a Time Bomb that have been scattered throughout the centuries.  It follows the usual pattern of locating parts of objects that are then assembled in Inventory for you to replace in their correct locations, again not necessarily the ones in which they are found, and are also used to open hidden rooms or retrieve other pieces held by characters.  Unlike the first Game of this series there are now puzzles/mini games to be solved to open rooms, unlock trunks, etc. and ultimately, along with found objects,to open the next portal.   This then takes you on to the next location in time, which are:

  1. Viking Age
  2. French Revolution
  3. Wild West
  4. Caribbean Pirates
  5. Age of Robots
  6. Ancient Egypt
  7. Dark Ages
  8. Age of Gods

These are great locations, with at least four main sites in each plus a few extra sub-sites. – for example in Wild West there are 4 sites, 2 in town 1 Indian site and 1 forest site; within these there are shop sites, a stage coach site, and a dam site.  This gives a lot more game-play than the previous Game did, which makes it more satisfying.  At each location you are rewarded with an artifact which is not from that time, but which, before returning to his Great Uncle, he must put in the right place in time.

However, there are a couple of places that are particularly frustrating.  In the French Revolution locations the search is difficult, less straightforward, with objects that are hard to see – this might improve by resetting through Microsoft 7 – and a tricky puzzle to solve to open the door to the hidden cellar.  And in Age of Robots there is a puzzle I have yet to solve – I know what is required, but I cannot make it happen!  I’ve had to resort to the Skip button which is something I very rarely do.

So the Game gets a higher SF but also a higher FF!  As with the previous Game, this one leads into the next, as the Time Bomb blows him off course.

MORTIMER BECKETT – AND THE LOST KING

Full marks to this Game!!  The graphics are fantastic – clear, colourful, well depicted, authentic, detailed, with excellent 3D and Mortimer a definite character within the play – though of course you play the action for him as required.  There is absolutely no need to reset this Game through Troubleshooting – well not until Microsoft have updated us all into the future!

Blasted into a different time-zone by the Time Bomb from the previous Game, Mortimer has to locate 8 magical jewels for the crown of the lost king of Zantya.  His quest is to find these, and rid the Kingdom of the usurper who took the throne, with the aid of loyal subjects of the missing King.

There is a great Tutorial page called General Tips which you can pull up any time you need it by pressing F1 on your keyboard.  It tells you ALL you need to know to play the game so I will not repeat it here.  Needless to say it follows the format of the previous 2 Games, along with a little twist to the Mini Games.  Plus there is the introduction of Hot-Zones (hotspots) where items need to be used.

With these multiple locations, this Game has a lot of Game-play, puzzles to solve, and enough intrigue and difficulty to keep your mind actively participating.  The ending is the surprise you like to get, with the hint of a possible future Mortimer Beckett game to keep you watching the game market.

The SF is top notch!!   And no FF in sight.
