TIME MYSTERIES – The Ancient Spectres

by ARTIFEX MUNDI; BIGFISH GAMES

Jud’s Game Rating:

Graphics ****  Player participation (PP) ****  Satisfaction Factor (SF) ***

Frustration Factor (FF) **   Fair Play (FP) ***  Tedium Factor (TF) *

This game could be quite interesting to play if there were a little more guidance, and if the Graphics were a little less atmospheric.  They could be a little clearer as well, but they were acceptable.  I liked the fact that if you don’t like or get sick of Hidden Object sites you could play a Mini Game instead – the only one I played during the Tutorial, which I didn’t need but usually check in case there are unusual instructions, was a bubble game which was fun.

I had to Skip through most of the Puzzles due to time constraints – I need to play as much of the game as possible in my free Trial Hour to ensure an informed review – their difficulty level required some time and patience to solve them, and that was playing Regular Mode.  Expert Mode was also available in Options.

The story is interesting, creepy, as you’d expect from a game about spectres, and the authenticity of the settings was really well done.  But tedium TF  set in while trying to work out what to do next, without having to click the Hint button to get a nudge towards the next location.  This was not much help I have to say, especially if you were rooms away from where you needed to be.

What the game needs is a Map which will show you the active spots, and your location.  Also it could do with some more Tools – perhaps more items to find individually as you only gain one per HO site – and instructions as the game is rather nebulous, leaving you wandering back and forth having apparently done everything.  FF

I’d have liked to continue playing, but hadn’t played enough during the Trial to make me want to buy the game.  Give it a try and see what you think.
